What are the signs? Mild dehydration may result in dryness of mouth, inability to urinate, straining during bowel movements, cramping in the limbs, headache, weakness, sleepiness, and irritability. More serious dehydration may require hospitalization.

What to do? Encourage the person to drink water frequently, particularly when ill. Older adults should consult with their physician to find out what a safe amount of fluid intake is for him/her personally. Sit down immediately if weak or dizzy, to prevent falls.
